                 The“Harry Potter”Books
American readers, young and old, love“Harry Potter”. The three stories about an 11-year old orphan boy’s magical adventures remain at the top of the New York Times bestseller list. Five million hardback copies have been sold so far.
Some fundamentalist Christian say the themes of magic and witchcraft aren’t healthy for young readers.
The main character in the books, an 11-year old boy named Harry Potter, attends a school for wizards and witches, where he discovers and learns to use his magical powers. The books published so far are Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
An influential, conservative Christian organization, known as“Focus on the Family”, says it has received more than 200 complaints from parents concerned about these books.
Bob Waliszewski is a spokesman for“Focus on the Family”which is based in Colorado.
“Some kids are not going to realize that it’s fantasy. Some kids will says,‘You know what. I think witchcraft is the way I want to go.’And of course, that’s where we believe it’s harmful.”
Some Christian groups reportedly go so far as to warn that the books’ amazing popularity is the work of the Devil. Judith Krug, with the American Library Association, located in Chicago, Illinois, says the books are about the triumph of good over evil. She says they are popular because Scottish author J.K. Rowling is a good storyteller and writer.
Ms. Krug says she’s never seen anything like the“Harry Potter”craze.
“Can you believe or have you ever heard of lines weaving around the streets, of young people and their parents standing in line to buy a book at midnight because the kids wouldn’t wait until next day—they were afraid that the books wouldn’t be there, that they would all be bought, they would be sold out? And they were right. So this is a phenomenon that I can’t remember. It might have happened before, but I really don’t think that the numbers of young people involved have ever been as great as they are now”.
Librarians and teachers around the country praise the books for reviving young Americans’ interest in literature. In many US schools, students’ good behavior is rewarded with a selection from“Harry Potter.”
Again, Judith Krug:“I talked to enough teachers to know that the teachers will say,‘Now, we have to get through this, this, this and this, and if we do, then I will read you a chapter of Harry Potter.’And it’s also being used as a discipline tool, because the young people really want to hear the book. So they’re whipping through their assigned work and they’re on their best behavior. The whole thing is kind of charming, if you ask me. I think it’s wonderful.”
Just what is it that makes boys and girls, who used to prefer videos and TV, now spend hours at home with a 400-page“Harry Potter”book? There appears to be no one answer, other than“Harry Potter”strikes an imaginative chord with children, and many adults, as well.
I recently asked a group of children and parents strolling through a suburban Maryland shopping center:
  “Tell me what you think.”
  “I think they’re fantastic.”
  “Why do you like them?”
“Imagination, you know, it takes you into a different world. They’re fantastic to read. They’re easy to read and it’s just drawn into it. I love it.”
An 11-year old boy:“I am Andy Cacheris.”
  “How old are you?”
  “I am eleven.”
“Can you tell me-is it possible for you to tell me the story in a nutshell, maybe the first book, or just a little bit about the character, the main character?”
“Pretty much. Harry Potter, he is the son of famous wizards, and he is honest, brave, and a pretty cool character.”
11-year old Andy Cacheris of Bethesda, Maryland adds that, in his view, it’s untrue that Harry Potter has a bad influence on kids. Says Andy,“They don’t want to learn magic. Kids think the books is fun.”
