美国电影“音乐之声”有一首插曲的歌词这样唱到：“ When you study, you begin with ABC. When you sing, you begin with do, re, mi. ”开始学习英语时，必须从字母 A 、 B 、 C 学起。 A 、 B 、 C 是英语 26 个字母中开头的几个字母，它们可以组成许多有趣的词语。笔者现将其列举出来，供大家欣赏。

    1. A1 （美）意为“第一流的；头等的；完全地；恰好地”。如：

    Yesterday I was ill but today I am feeling A1.

    我昨天病了，可是今天我身体好极了。

    The time will suit me A1.

    这时间对我来说非常合适。

    2. from A to Z 意为“从头到尾；完完全全；彻底地”。如：

    He is an old teacher. He knows his business from A to Z.

    他是位老教师，他完全熟悉自己的工作。

    The manager wanted everything checked from A to Z.

    经常要求把一切从头到尾都检查一遍。

    3. straight A （美）意为“成绩最优秀的（指学生）”。如：

    a straight A student through high school 在中学成绩一贯优秀的学生

    4. the A to Z 意为“（关于某学科等的）全部知识”。知：

    She knew the A to Z of cooking. 她对烹饪十分在行。

    5. as easy as ABC 意为“极其容易”。

    6. the ABC of …意为“……的基础知识”。如：

    He pretended to know all about sports, but I discovered he didn't know the ABC of football.

    他自称懂得各种体育运动，可是我发现他连足球的起码常识都不懂。
