    On Deck

    (Rose cries, and runs past Jack, who is lying on a bench, smoking She climbs over the ship's railings, and hangs on 1 with her back to the ship, about to jump into the sea.)

    Jack: Don't do it!

    Rose: Stay back! Don't come any closer!

    Jack: Come on! Just give me your hand and I'll pull you back over 2 .

    Rose: No, stay where you are! I mean it 3 ! I'll let go 4 !

    Jack: No, you won't!

    Rose: What do you mean “No I won't”? Don't presume 5 to tell me what I will and will not do. You don't know me.

    Jack: Well, you would have done it already 6 .

    Rose: You're distracting 7 me. Go away!

    Jack: I can't. I'm involved 8 now. You let go, and I'm gonna jump in there after you.

    (Jack starts taking off his shoes.)

    Rose: Don't be absurd 9 . You'd be killed.

    Jack: I'm a good swimmer.

    Rose: The fall alone would kill you.

    Jack: It would hurt. I'm not saying it wouldn't. To tell you the truth, I'm a lot more concerned about 10 that water being so cold.

    Rose: How cold?

    Jack: Freezing. Maybe a couple of degrees over. Have you ever, uh, ever been to Wisconsin 11 ?

    Rose: What?

    Jack: Well, they have some of the coldest winters around. I grew up there, near Chippewa Falls 12 . I remember when I was a kid, me and my father, we went icefishing out on Lake Wisota. Icefishing 13 is, you know, when you …

    Jack: Sorry. You just seemed like, you know, kind of an indoor girl 14 . Anyway, I, uh, fell through some thin ice, and I'm telling you, water that cold, like right down there, it hits you like a thousand knives stabbing 15 you all over your body. You can't breathe, you can't think, at last not about anything but the pain. Which is why I'm not looking forward to 16 jumping in there after you. Like I said, I don't have a choice. I guess I'm kind of hoping that you'll come back over the railing and get me off the hook 17 here.

    (He starts to take off his coat.)

    Rose: You're crazy!

    Jack: That's what everybody says, but, with all due respect 18 , miss, I'm not the one hanging off the back of a ship here. Come on! Come on, give me your hand. You don't want to do this.

    (She takes his hand, and turns around. They are facing each other, but Rose is on the other side of the railing.)

    Jack: Whew. I'm Jack Dawson.

    Rose: I'm Rose Dewitt Buchater 19 .

    Jack: I have to get you to write that one down. Come on.

    (Rose begins to climb. She puts her foot on the rail, but she steps on 20 the bottom of her long dress as she begins to climb over the railing. She slips and falls off the ship, screaming, but Jack has a strong grip on her arm.)

    Jack: I've got you! Come on!

    Rose: Help me, please!

    Jack: Listen. Listen to me. I've got you and I won't let go. Now pull yourself up. Come on! Come on! Try! You can do it!

    (Men, hearing Rose's screams on another part of the ship, go running to the scene 21 .)

    Jack: I got you! (He pulls Rose up over the railing, and they fall in a heap on the deck just as the other men arrive. Jack is on top of Rose, with his shoes and clothing partially undone from when he removed them in preparation to 22 jumping in after Rose. The men stop and look at the scene suspiciously.)

    Steward: What's all this?

    Steward: (to Jack) Stand back and don't move an inch 23 ! Fetch the master-at-arms 24 !

    Cal: This is completely unacceptable! What made you think that you could put your hands on 25 my fianc é e? Look at me, you filth!

    Rose: Cal!

    Cal: What did you think you were doing?

    Rose: Cal! Stop! It was an accident!

    Cal: (to Rose) You must be freezing. Let's get you inside.

    Gracie: Um, perhaps a little something for the boy?

    Cal: Rose is displeased. What to do? I know. (to Jack) Perhaps you could join us for dinner tomorrow evening, to regale our group with 34 your heroic tale.

    Rose's Cabin

    (There's a soft knock. The door opens and Cal enters.)

    (He opens a box, in which is a magnificent blue stone.)

    （她抓紧他的手，转过身来，他们互相看着，中间隔着船舷。）

    杰克：我叫杰克·道森。

    杰克：得请你写下来才记得住。来吧。

    （露丝试着爬过船舷。她把脚踩在船舷上，但是当她准备爬过来的时候，脚踩在了长裙的角上，她身子一晃，向船外摔去。她尖叫起来。杰克用力地抓住她。）

    杰克：我抓住你了，来吧！

    露丝：救救我。

    杰克：听着。听我说。我抓住你了，我不会放手。来，用力爬上来。来，用力！你能行的！

    （听到露丝的叫声，人们纷纷跑向现场）

    杰克：我抓住你了。（他把露丝拉过船舷，两人摔倒在甲板上。这时，其他的人赶到。杰克正压在露丝身上。刚才为准备救露丝而解开的衣服鞋带都被人们看在眼里。人们面面相觑，心存怀疑。）

    船员：这是怎么回事？

    船员（对杰克）往后站，站着别动！把警卫找来。

    卡尔：这真让人难以接受！你怎么敢对我的未婚妻动手动脚？看着我，你这个混蛋！

    露丝：卡尔！

    卡尔：你以为你在干什么？

    露丝：卡尔！别这样！这是一次事故！

    卡尔：一次事故？

    露丝：对。真难堪，真的。我的身体探到栏杆外面，滑了一下。我探出身想去看，看，啊，啊……

    卡尔：推进器？

    露丝：推进器。我，我脚下打滑，几乎就掉下去了，但是这位道森先生在这儿救了我，他自己也几乎掉下去。

    卡尔：你想去看……她想看推进器。

    格雷西：我说过的，女人和机械从来不相容。

    警卫：（对杰克）是这样吗？

    杰克：对，对，大概是这样。

    格雷西：啊，那这个孩子应该是个英雄了。不错，孩子。干得好。那么没什么事，我们回去喝白兰地。

    卡尔：（对露丝）你一定冻坏了，进去吧。

    格雷西：呃，是不是应该给这孩子一点奖赏？

    卡尔：当然。呃，拉夫恰先生，我想二十圆应该够了。

    露丝：哦，这就是救了你心爱的女人的报酬吗？

    卡尔：露丝不高兴了。怎么办呢？我知道了。（对杰克）那么请你明天晚上来和我们共进晚餐好吗？再向我们讲一讲你的英雄事迹。

    卡尔：好，就这么定了。（对格雷西）那一定很有趣。

    （他们走回船内。）

    杰克：（对拉夫恰）我可不可以，呃，抽只烟？

    拉夫恰：（看着杰克的鞋子）你应该把鞋子系好。真有意思，那位女士突然滑倒，你竟然还有时间脱衣服，解鞋带。

露丝的卧舱

    （一阵轻轻的敲门声，门开处，卡尔进来。）

    卡尔：我知道你一直不开心。我不想假装知道为什么。我原来想把这留到下星期我们订婚时再送给你。但是我想今晚就给你。

    （他打开一个首饰盒，里面是一块美丽的蓝宝石。）

    露丝：天哪！

    卡尔：希望这能提醒我对你的感情。

    （他给她戴上项链。）

    露丝：它是……

    卡尔：钻石？对，确切地说， 56 克拉。路易十六戴过的。他们叫它“海洋之心”。

    露丝和卡尔：（同时）海洋之心。

    卡尔：对。

    露丝：太美了。

    卡尔：是皇室戴的。我们就贵如皇室，露丝。你知道，这世界上，你要什么我就能给你什么，你要什么都可以。只要你不违背我，我会永远满足你。把你的心交给我吧，露丝。
