  阅读练习:My nanna

  (来源:选自《高中英语读本》)

My nanna is not like any other grandmother I know. For a start, she wears the most ungrandmotherly clothes. At home, she wears large, brightly coloured shirts, blue jeans and long, leather boots. When she goes outside she puts on one of the cowboy hats that hang behind the back door. When it rains she wears a heavy, yellow fisherman's raincoat and rubber boots. About every six weeks, Nanna goes to the city to listen to opera and then she looks quite different. For her trip to the city, she wears a black shirt and black trousers and a long silk scarf around her neck. As long as I have known her, I have never seen her wear the same scarf twice. She must have hundreds of them.

Another thing about Nanna is that she loves animals. She lives in the country and has six dogs, four cats, five pigs, a donkey and two goats to look after. As well as them,Nanna looks after injured wildlife until the animals are well. In her house there are often baby kangaroos sleeping in bags hanging from the back of chairs and koalas in boxes on the table. In her lounge room, there are glass tanks for the snakes she looks after. All these animals cost a lot of money to feed and take a lot of Nanna’s time, but she doesn’t care about that. She would rather go without food herself than see an animal going hungry.

Nanna is a potter. She makes unusual plates and vases that are as colourful as her clothes in a large, sunny studio in her garden. Twice a week she teaches school children how to make plates and vases too. Adults are always asking her to teach them, but she won’t. She says adults have lost all their imagination and they are no fun.

Nanna travels a round on a huge motorbike. She wears a white helmet, which is most unusual because she usually wears bright colours. However, her leather jacket looks very much like it belongs to her. It is bright pink with a white tiger across the back of it.

Nanna has a huge house with lots of bed rooms, so there is always room for visitors. She loves people coming to stay but she never fusses over them. She fills the fridge with delicious food, makes sure the bedrooms are comfortable and then tells her guests to make themselves at home. That means you can come and go as you like, you can cook when you are hungry, you can visit the animals or go for a swim in the river whenever you want to without asking anyone if it is all right. She doesn’t get angry with you for being noisy and she doesn’t tell you to clean your room. She always has time to talk to you and she never criticizes. She’s the best nanna in the world.

  Hi Sally

David and I are having a rest today, so I thought I’d use the hotel’s Internet service to drop you a line. Thanks for your email, which I’ve just read. It was great to hear all the news from home. I’m glad Paul is feeling better now, and congratulations to you on your new job. I can’t wait to hear more about it.

We’re staying in a wonderful hotel in a hutong near the Drum and Bell Towers(钟鼓楼) which are not far from the Palace Museum(故宫博物院).The hotel was built for an important official who worked for Empress Cixi during the Qing Dynasty hundreds of years ago. The buildings were designed around three courtyards which are cool and pleasant to sit in. Best of all, the hotel is decorated with Ming-era calligraphy, art and furniture, so you feel like you are living history. 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 下一页
