No one wants to look silly or do the wrong thing at a new job. It is important to make the right impression—not the wrong one—from the very first day.You will face new people. You will be in a new place. It may be difficult to know what to do.Here are seven tips to help you make it through the first days at a new job:

1.First impressions can last forever. Make sure you make a good one. Before your first day, find out if your new job has a dress_code.If so,be sure to follow it.No matter what, always be neat and clean.

2.Get to work on time.Employers value employees who come to work right on time.Give yourself an extra 15 minutes to make sure you arrive on time.

3.Pay attention to introductions. One of the first things that your supervisor may do is to introduce you to coworkers. These coworkers will be important to you. They are the ones who will answer your questions when the boss is not around.

4.Ask plenty of questions.Make sure that your supervisor has told you what is expected of you. If he or she has not told you your job duties, ask for a list.Set daily and weekly goals for yourself.

5.Do not make personal phone calls. You should never make personal phone calls to your friends and family unless it is an emergency.

6.Do not take too long for lunch. What is the lunchhour policy at your new job?You can find out from your supervisor or your company"s personnel department. For example,do people eat at their desks or does everyone take a full hour outside the workplace?

7.Never be the first one to leave.Observe how your coworkers behave around quitting time. It does no good for you to be eager to leave.

54.The passage is for people who________.

A.are going to do new jobs B.have parttime jobs

C.want to get a better job D.want to get a pay rise

57.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?

B.Coworkers will be important to you when the boss is out.

C.You shouldn"t ask too many questions in case you trouble others.

A man examined the ears of hundreds of children in Europe and found that about one quarter of the children were a little deaf.

These children did not know it themselves;they thought they could hear as well as anybody. The teachers thought so too, only they were quite sure that those special children were dull(迟钝的)ones in the school. No doubt they were rather surprised when the man who examined them found that generally, the dull ones were also the deaf ones.

The same man next went to a school in England. There he asked the teachers to pick out seventy bright children and seventy dull children for him to examine. He found about twice as many deaf children among the seventy who were dull as among the seventy who were bright.Dullness and deafness often go together.

From there he went to another school, where he found that most of the bright children could hear his watch tick when it was as far from their ears as fifty inches, while most of the dull children could not hear it unless it was as close to them as thirty inches.

All these experiments showed that when children are a little deaf they seem dull. After doctors cure them, they can be as bright as anybody. The chances are that the better we hear, the quicker we shall understand. It is important, therefore,to have good hearing.

58.The children who were a little deaf were quite sure that________.

A.they were dull B.they were as bright as anybody

C.they could hear no worse than anybody D.they were less bright

  59.In a school in England,the man examined________.

A.the worse one hears, the duller he will be

B.the quicker one understands, the better he will hear

  C.the better one hears,the slower he"ll understand

  D.the better one understands,the slower he"ll hear

61.“Dullness and deafness often go together”means“________.”

A.When a child is deaf,he must be dull

B.When a child is dull,he must be deaf

C.Dullness has something to do with deafness

D.Dullness has nothing to do with deafness

  D

You have heard the expression“horse sense”.As you may imagine,it came from the time when the majority of people traveled in vehicles(车辆)drawn by horses.A horse does have a lot of common sense, and there are many true stories about horses having saved their drivers from danger of death.

Today for the most part, people travel by train, ship, airplane, and car,but very little by the use of horses。Modern vehicles are _propelled_ by engines, and an engine does not have any sense. In case of danger, many horses could be depended on to help. Not so with the engine;the driver must do all the things.

In recent years, the speed of travel has increased greatly。With the increased speed comes greatly increased danger. The driver of a powerful engine needs to be careful.A moment of being careless may cost a life.In order to drive today,a person must be able to see clearly, and he must learn and follow carefully the rules for safety on the road。Greater attention is the price we pay for using a machine instead of a horse.

  62.The passage mainly talks about____________.

  A.engines B.safe driving C.using horses D。modern machines

63。The underlined word“propel”in the second paragraph means

  A.repair B .raise C.push forward D.make

B.a driver needs to be able only to tell red from green

C.an eye test is an important part of a driver’s examination

D.greater attention is needed for a driver while driving a machine

65.Which of the following is true?

A.A driver of a vehicle drawn by horses doesn’t need to see or hear well.

B.The driver of a car must follow the rules of safety.

C.Horses are animals that know dangers most.

D.It is better for vehicles to be pulled by horse than to be pushed by engine
