One thing that British and Chinese cultures share is a love for fine tea. Today, when we think of Western tea culture, we often think of the English and beautiful china tea cups.

People believe that an English lady, Anna, first introduced the idea of afternoon tea. In the 18th and 19th centuries, the English ate only two main meals each day: breakfast and a heavy supper that would last for several hours in the evening. As a result, people often got very hungry during the long wait between these two meals. To solve this problem, Anna came up with the clever idea of inviting some friends to join her for an afternoon meal between four and five o”clock. This meal included cakes and sandwiches, and tea was served to wash down the food. In order to make this afternoon meal important, fine china cups and plates, and silver teapots, knives, forks and spoons were used. Soon, afternoon tea parties became popular social occasions. Today, afternoon tea parties continue to play an important part in the social life in modern Britain.

Coffee also has an important role in British culture. People often use the words “Will you come for coffee?” to mean “Would you like to come to my home for a chat?” Normally, several different drinks such as tea, hot chocolate or a soft drink like orange juice will be served as well as coffee, and you will be asked what you would like. However, you will not normally be offered wine at a “coffee” party.

In the 17th century London, coffeehouses were busy and noisy places. Businessmen and bankers went to coffeehouses to do their business, as well as to drink coffee. In fact, the London Stock Exchange

(股票交易)is believed to have started from these coffeehouses.

A year ago I began training to swim the English Channel. I will be 58 years old. My friends thought I had lost my minds, and my wife was somewhat worried. The question I was asked over and over was this, “Why?”

When a student reporter at Indiana recently asked me this question, I said, “First, let me ask you a question. What are your plans for this summer?”

He replied that he was going to work in a supermarket. I didn”t have to say more, and he understood my point.

A challenge and something of an adventure are welcome whether you are 20 or 58, and preparing to swim the Channel is far better than working in a supermarket, especially when you have a choice.

But why did I decide to swim the Channel at 58? Perhaps I myself can hardly give a satisfactory answer.

The Channel has always been the greatest challenge to swimmers, a test of ability, luck, and even bravery. It is this challenge that attracts about 100 swimmers a year, who are willing to spend time, effort, and money trying it.

One fact that adds to my interest is that, if I succeed, I will be the oldest person every to swim the Channel.

I don”t think I am a superman. I do think I have at least two things in favor.

First, I am training hard now swimming 7 and a half miles a day. Second, I am a resolute man. Once I set up a goal, I wont” give it up easily. And this swim has long been a goal. I have a feeling I will be mentally ready.

52. The sentence in Para 3 “he understood my point” means “he understood ___________.”

A. what my question meant: setting up a challenging goal makes life interesting

B. I did not like his question and did not want to answer it

C. it was difficult for me to give a proper answer

D. I thought little of his plans for that summer

53. Most likely, the author decided to swim the Channel because he ___________.

A. enjoyed challenges

B. wanted very much to show his ability to his friends

C. wanted to prove that old man can swim the Channel

D. did not fully realize the difficulties he might meet with

54. Which of the following statements would the author most probably agree with?

A. Old people should do more exercises.

B. Old people should do the things they like.

C. Life”s challenges can be overcome at any age.

D. People should recognize the dangers of physical stress.

55. From the passage we know the author is ___________.

A. careful B. strong-minded C. friendly D. romantic

Butterflies are common all over the world, but butterflies in hot countries are usually bigger and more brightly colored than those in cooler countries, and there are more different kinds.

Usually the male butterflies are more brightly colored than the females. The females have bigger and heavier bodies since they carry the eggs. The bright colors of the male help to attract the female, and the duller colors of the female make them less likely to be caught by enemies before they have laid their eggs.

Some butterflies have a bright pattern colors on the upper surface of their wings which show when flying, but when they rest on a tree of leaves they close their wings. On the undersides of their wings there are green and brown marks which look like the tree or leaves. They are then difficult to be seen. The best example of this is the Dead Leaf Butterfly. When its wings are closed, it looks exactly like a dead leaf. There are even marks that look like the holes in a dead leaf. When a bird is chasing a butterfly and it closes its wings, it seems to have disappeared completely.

Many butterflies have round marks on their wings that look like eyes. When they are resting, their wings are closed, and these cannot be seen. When a bird sees one, and begins to attack it, the butterfly would open its wings. The bird thinks it sees two eyes starting at it, and is frightened, and flies away.

1. In what ways are butterflies in hotter countries different from those of cooler countries?

____________________________________________.

2. Why do the male butterflies usually have bright color?

____________________________________________.

3. Why do the female butterflies have bigger and heavier bodies?

Because ____________________________________________.

4. Which side of the wings of the Dead Leaf Butterfly looks like a dead leaf?

____________________________________________ of the wings.

5. According to the last paragraph, on which part the wings of the butterflies can you see the marks that look like eyes?

____________________________________________ of the wings.
