2. Discuss and answers the questions in Pre-reading for the Ss to predict the contents and organization about the text.

3. Read the text, get the main information and idea and then find out the characteristics and similarities of the ancient and modern Olympics.

Teaching & learning procedures:

Step 1 Lead-in

Hello, everyone. You know the 29th Olympic Games will be held in Beijing, China next year. So the Olympics have been a popular and hot topic in China. In this unit, Unit 2, we”ll talk about and learn about the Olympic Games. I think that everyone can say something about the Olympics. Now, tell us what you know about the Olympics.

Step 2 Warming up

Task 1: Work in pairs and ask each other the questions and then collect answers.

Teacher reads through the questions to the Ss and explains the meaning of the new words, but it shouldn”t too much time because the new words will appear in the text again. Teacher can give detailed explanations to the words and phrases while leaning the language points in the text.

New words and phrases:

1. ancient adj. 古代的;古老的

2. compete vi.


3. take part in


4. medal n.


5. stand for  


eg. What does UN/ UK/ USA/ PRC stand for?

What does the sign stand for?   It stands for victory.

Answers to the questions:

1. Olympia (Greece)                              2. one (Greece)

7. the five continents

8. The five mascots are officially called the Five Friendlies. They are Beibei, the fish; Jinjing, the panda; Huanhuan, the Olympic flame; Yingying, the Tibetan antelopes; and Nini, the swallow. The first syllables from their two-syllable names form a line the reads “Beijing Huanying Ni”, or in English “Welcome to Beijing”. (Show the short video to present the answer.)

Task 2: Have a short Olympic quiz to broaden the Ss knowledge about the Olympic Games. (To ppt. Check the answers and give all the Ss marks to see how much they know about the Olympic Games.)

Step 3 Pre-reading

Task 1 Talk about the first and second questions and report their answers. (Ss can get some clues from warming up and Olympic quiz)

Possible answers to Question 1:

Ancient Olympic Games

Modern Olympic Games

1. Only free citizens of one country could take part.

Question 2: The next Olympic Games will be held in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012.

Task 2 Scan the title, the pictures and the form of the text to predict the contents of the text.

(All kinds of answers are possible. Correct answers: The similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympics.)

Step 3 Fast Reading

Task 1 Preview the vocabulary in the reading.

Ask the Ss what kinds of words may be used in a passage about the Olympic Games. Classify some of the (new) words into categories and get them to match the Chinese with the English words so that they can read and understand the text easily.

Words about the Olympics:

Facilities: stadium, gym, gymnasiums, track, etc.

Events: gymnastics, athletes, running, shooting, track and field, etc.

People involved: athlete, player, volunteer, host, judge, etc

Reward: medal, wreath, etc.

Others: motto, swifter, etc.

Task 2 Scan the text as quickly as possible and find out the main idea about the text. (Remind the Ss to pay attention to the words the interviewer”s.)

Main idea: The similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympics.

Task 3 Read the text much carefully and find out the similarities and differences between the ancient and modern Olympics and think about the questions in Exercise 2 in Comprehension.

1. Pausanias is amazed that many country take part in the Olympic Games and woman too and there are two sets of Games—the Winter and the Summer Olympics.

2. Because Li Yan had explained that it is a great honour to host the Olympic Games.

3. He thinks that so many things have changed in the Olympic Games the he fears that the spirit of the Olympics may have changed too.

Step 4 Listening & Retelling

Task1 Listen to the tape of the text to get a better understanding of the text.

Task 2 Try to answer more questions about the text or retell the text with their own words.

(Teacher can design more questions to test the Ss” comprehension of the text.)


1. Listen to the tape and read the text.

2. Surf the internet or read English Weekly for more information about the Olympics and prepare a report about Olympic knowledge.

3. Preview and remember the new words in the text.
