Tapescript:

Xiaofeng: You know, Kevin, there are many beautiful places in China that you should visit.

Kevin: I”m sure there are! Where should I start, Xiaofeng?

Xiaofeng: Well, first, there”s Beijing, the capital of China.

Kevin: I know Beijing, of course. It”s where I”m studying right now!

Xiaofeng: But you”re still new to the city. In Beijing you must visit Tian”anmen Square, and then

to the north of it is Beihai Park. Have you been to the Forbidden City?

Kevin: Whereabouts is that?

Xiaofeng: The Forbidden City is located between Tian”anmen Square and Beihai Park. It was the home of some of China”s emperors.

Kevin: I can”t wait to see it! And where is the Temple of Heaven?

Xiao

feng: It”s to the south of Tian” anmen Square.

Kevin: Great! I”ll visit all of these places. Well, I”ve also heard a lot about Shanghai, but I”ve never been there.

Xiaofeng: Shanghai is on the coast, about 1,000 kilometres south of Beijing. It”s another great city. Though one of my favourite places in that area is actually to the south of Shanghai, off the coast of the city of Ningbo. It”s called Putuoshan and it”s a small island with many Buddhist temples. It”s very quiet, much different from the big cities.

Kevin: Sounds excellent!

Xiaofeng: Yeah. It is really, really beautiful!

Kevin: I”m looking forward to visiting all of those places. In fact, I”m going to get my camera and start sightseeing today!

D

Tapescript:

Andrew: Hi, Lee! Didn”t you just get back from Europe with your family?

Lee: Yeah, Andrew. We spent two weeks there for the summer holiday. It was brilliant!

Andrew: Where did you go ?

Lee: Well, we started in France, and then moved on to Italy and Spain.

Andrew: Did you visit the capitals of each country?

Lee: Well, we visited Paris and Rome.

Andrew: Paris is in France, isn”t it?

Lee: Yes. I really liked Paris. The architecture was amazing. We saw the Eiffel Tower - one of the most well-known landmarks in the world, visited the Louvre - a world-famous art gallery and ate in some really nice restaurants.

Andrew: Sounds like a great trip. What did you see in Italy and Spain?

Lee: The architecture in Rome is gorgeous, too. The history of that city is quite fascinating! In Spain we didn”t visit Madrid, the capital city, we went to some towns on the coast instead.

Andrew: Sounds like a brilliant trip and it looks like this trip has made a good impression on you.

Lee: It has! The French and the Italians really love their food. I ate so much that I gained two kilograms on this trip!

E

Tapescript:

Oliver: Heidi, I”m planning a trip across Europe. May I ask you for some advice?

Heidi: Sure, Oliver. What would you like to know?

Oliver: Well, I want to know how I should travel through Europe, where I should go and what I should do.

Heidi:Well, the train is a great way to travel across Europe. You can buy a train pass fairly cheap and this will allow you to travel anywhere across Europe for a certain amount of time. I would suggest you get a one-month train pass to start your travels.

Oliver: Sounds great! Where should I go?

Heidi: In my opinion, you have to visit France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.

Oliver: When you say the United Kingdom, you mean…

Heidi: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales. You”ll want to take a ship to the UK because it”s an island country. It”s off the coast of France.

Oliver: OK. A train and a ship.

Heidi: You might also want to buy a travel book and learn some of the local language. Europeans love it when you can speak a bit of their language.

Oliver: Really?

Heidi: Yeah. In France they speak French, in Italy they speak Italian, in Spain they speak Spanish and in the United Kingdom they speak English.

Oliver: Well, I already speak English, so I should be OK in the UK.

Heidi: These European languages are similar, so if you can speak some French you”ll find Italian a little easier to learn.

Oliver: Excellent! Thanks, Heidi. I”ll be sure to take lots of pictures of my trip to show you.

Heidi: It”s a deal!

F

Tapescript:

Tom: Mum, can you help me study for my geography test at school tomorrow?

Mum: Of course, Tom. What is the test about?

Tom: It”s a test on Europe. Here, take this book and ask me questions, OK?

Mum: OK. Here we go. First question: What is the capital city of Italy?

Tom: Rome.

Mum: Very good. Next question: In which country is Edinburgh located?

Tom: In the UK.

Mum: Great. What language do the people in Italy speak?

Tom: Italy-ese.

Mum: Uh, no. Italian. Next question: What country is located between Portugal and France?

Tom: Uh… Spain?

Mum: Excellent! Next: What parts does the United Kingdom include?

Tom: England, Scotland, Northern Ireland… I can”t remember.

Mum: And Wales. It”s on the west coast of the island of Great Britain.

Tom: Oh. Isn”t that a strange name for a place? Like the fish?

Mum: No, it”s not, dear. People from Wales are known as welsh. It”s also the name of their local language and of course they also speak English. And a whale, as in the animal that lives in the water, is not a fish. It”s a mammal. It just looks like a fish.

Tom: Wow! Do you think that will be on my geography test tomorrow?

Mum: Probably not.

Tapescript:

Paris is known as the City of Lights for its world-famous beauty. More than 30 million people from the world travel to Paris each year to see the famous landmarks, visit the museums, enjoy French food and sit in its sidewalk cafés and nightclubs. Paris is the political, cultural and economic center of France. Of course, just about everyone in the world must be familiar with the most famous landmark of France-the Eiffel Tower. The Eiffel Tower is built of iron and is almost 300 metres tall. The Eiffel Tower has three levels, with a restaurant on the first level. Another of France”s famous sites is the Louvre-one of the largest well-known museums in the world. The Louvre is located beside the River Seine. The kings of France lived here from time to time between the years of 1363 to 1682, but the Louvre became a public museum in 1793. The French love their food! Food is a major part of the French culture. The Sunday mid-day meal is an old tradition in France- a time when families gather and prepare a huge amount of food and wine and spend the afternoon dining.
